"No Excuses" Spelling Words for Highland Park Students - All Grade Levels
Highland Park has adopted the Scientific Spelling methodology across grades 1-5 to better equip our students to discover the sounds, patterns, and rules of spelling. When these elements are in place our language is 85% reliable! In Scientific Spelling students are led to discover these patterns and apply them to their spelling rather than simply memorize weekly lists.
When students bring their spelling assignments home encourage them to explain the pattern of the week to help strengthen their understanding of the spelling concepts. Our goal is that they can spell more than ten or twenty words on a list by applying these concepts to many new words.
To cover the remaining 15% of words in our language which are truly irregular or which are high frequency enough that we want to make sure they are automatic, Highland Park has adopted "no excuse" word lists for each grade level.
These are frequently used words that all students should know how to spell, at all times, when writing. Please help your students equip themselves with this knowledge - you can conduct verbal or written spelling tests with these words, create sentences with them, play games with them, etc.
