Highland Park third graders participate in a 2 month curriculum unit with the Middle Ages at its core. The students learn about all aspects of medieval life, including feudalism, the role of the church and the crusades. This is an interdisciplinary unit where the students learn about the middle ages in their math, language arts and social studies classes. They also create a number of craft projects, including batik banners, heraldic shields, stained glass and calligraphy. They have a number of computer projects as well, including one where they create a dragon. The unit culminates in a Faire and Festival where the students dress in costume and perform for their parents, as well as parade through the school and participate in volunteer led centers.
