Highland Park 1st graders recently completed studying a unit on wood. They looked at the properties of wood and at how various kinds of wood are alike and different, comparing pine, basswood, and redwood. Then they made different kinds of wood products - plywood and particleboard.

They also conducted experiments to find out what would happen to the different woods when they got wet, including a "sinking experiment" to find out how many paper clips it took to sink each type of wood. And finally, they learned some woodworking skills - sanding, nailing, staining, and making a sculpture by nailing pieces of wood together.
