Owls look different than other birds. Owls have their eyes on the front of their faces just like people. Owls have big fluffy feathers on their wings that help them to fly very quietly. Owls have many bones in their necks and when they turn their heads it looks like it can go in a circle. Some owls have a big tuft of feathers over their ears that look like horns. All owls have curved sharp beaks and large strong claws called talons which they use to catch and eat their food. Owls usually sleep in the day and hunt at night. During the day their feathers help them to blend into their surroundings. The owl's feathers also help them to fly quietly at night while they hunt using their very good night vision. When owls catch their prey they tear it using their talons and beaks and then they swallow it whole. The parts they cannot digest they vomit up as an owl pellet. When owls fly during the day they can scare other birds so some people use fake owls to keep birds away from their places.
Owls favorite things to eat are mice and rats. They also eat snakes and lizzards. Some of the larger owls can eat rabbits, possums, and raccoons.
Owls can be useful and helpful.
