Greetings, everyone. The children in my second grade class have created computer drawings and written paragraphs about a legendary character in American history, Johnny Appleseed. We enjoyed learning all about his life and the impact he made on the lives of the early settlers, and we wanted to share some of the information we learned about him.

Let us know what you think of our work!

Johnny Appleseed planted apple trees everywhere. He was born in Leominster, Massachusetts. He helped people plant apple trees so they could eat apples. He made cider, jelly, and juice from the apples. The seeds grew into orchards of trees. Now, Moms can make great apple pies.

Johnny Appleseed was a good person. In my picture I showed when he was going around planting apple seeds. When Johnny Appleseed started planting apple seeds he wasn't bringing any weapons like the other people were. He didn't even wear shoes and he walked the whole way. Johnny Appleseed got very sick once when it was winter. An Indian saw him lying on the snow and took him to her tribe and saved him. Almost all the animals and people were nice to him. He always helped people plant their seeds.

John Chapman is known as Johnny Appleseed. He lived from 1774 to 1845. The reason everyone called him Johnny Appleseed is wherever he went, he planted seeds. If anyone was around, he would give seeds to them to plant.

Some of his best friends were the Indians. Once John Chapman became very sick. An Indian mother and her child went out and came upon him. The child ran for help, and they took him to their village and nursed him back to health. When he was well, he thanked the Indians and continued to plant apple trees.

John Chapman (Johnny Appleseed) was born in 1774 and he died in 1845. He lived to be 74 years old and he walked from Massachusetts to Indiana unarmed and barefooted. He mostly gave apple seeds to people and told them to plant them. He thought that the world would look beautiful covered with apple trees. Sometimes he stopped to help the people do things like build cabins and plant seeds. He also tried to make peace between the Indians and the white men. I think Johnny is a hero.

In the 1700's John Chapman walked through four and a half states planting, giving away, getting, and passing on apple seeds. He got these from the mills that made apple cider out of apples. The mills didn't need the seeds so they sold them to John. He also got them from the apples and apple trees. John Chapman was kind and gentle, so whenever he was out in the wild walking he wouldn't try to hurt a dangerous animal. He is famous because he went around getting apple seeds. That's how he got his nickname, Johnny Appleseed.
