Castles of Wales
Beaumaris Castle
The
construction of Beaumaris Castle was started in 1295. An
unusual feature was the provision of a dock with direct access
to the sea. By 1298 money had run out and work stopped.
Beaumaris had reached the stage of construction we see today.
Absence of military assault allied to the quality of
construction has ensured its survival through the centuries.
Caerphilly Castle
Caerphilly was built between
1267 and 1272 to help gain English control over the Welsh
Marches. A huge artificial lake with a fortified dam was built
around the castle; the whole site covered about thirty acres,
making it one of the largest medieval fortifications in
Britain.
Cardiff Castle>
Around 1090 a motte was built
on this site on the remains of a large Roman fort which stood
here. In the 12th century, a stone keep was built
which from 1126 to 1134, was the last prison for Robert of
Normsndy after his capture in 1106. In 1471, the castle came
into possesion of the crown.
