Pattern is the underlying theme of mathematics. It is found
throughout our environment in many forms. The skill of recognizing, duplicating
and using patterns is a valuable problem solving tool. The children in Mrs.
Hull's kindergarten class discovered the enjoyment of creating various patterns
using their own artwork. The students were asked to create three images using
KidPix. By duplicating and reordering their three images, they were able to
create various patterns. In addition, students at the fourth grade level used tesselation concepts to
create computer-generated tesselations.
Other schools, such as Highland
Middle School in Libertyville, IL, have also explored tesselations through
art media. Math Forum's
Tesselation Tutorials is a good resource for learning how to create
computer-generated tesselations using HyperStudio and ClarisWorks Painting. Or, check out our
own site on creating ClarisWorks Drawing Tesselations.
