Have you ever been to Austin, Texas? If you haven't, you're in for a pleasant
surprise. Austin, nestled in the Texas Hill Country, offers a tremendous
variety of things to do and see. It would take web page after web page to tell
you everything there is to know about Austin.
When children in Mrs. Barr's first grade class were asked to write and
illustrate what they thought was special about Austin, we were a little
surprised. To an adult, the beauty of a sunset over Lake Travis may come to
mind. To a child, a juicy hamburger at a local restaurant may be just as
spectacular. Whatever the case, we hope our children's illustrations will give
you some insights into our town.

The Austin Children's Museum is
a museum just for kids! It is on West 5th Street. You can learn about things like bats, lions and rabbits. There

The bats live under the Congress Avenue Bridge in Austin. They fly out at
dusk. There are mover a millions of them. They fly out to get food for their

in Austin. You will like seeing the Texas Longhorn football team play. Their coach is John Mackovic. The
team is really good this year. They play at Memorial Stadium. Come and see them

The Paramount Theater

The Paramount Theater is a very old theater. It's on Congress Avenue.
It has a very big balcony. You can see plays like 101 Dalmations.
You can also see comics there. When they have a show, you might want to go!

Toad Hall is the best kid's book store
in the world. Toad Hall has a big room with all sorts of books. There's a room where you can go outside.
Sometimes authors even read from their books there! You may go to different

Bevo
has long horns. He is a longhorn steer. He's the mascot of the University of Texas. You can see him at Memorial Stadium. People enjoy seeing him at the stadium.
Someone dresses up as Bevo at football and basketball games. Bevo says, "Come see

Wild Basin is a nice place to visit. It has nature trails and waterfalls.
There are great rocks at Wild Basin. The trees are very pretty.
You can see scorpions, deer and squirrels. Wild Basin is really fun!

Amy's Ice Cream is the best ice cream shop in Austin.
There are several different Amy's in Austin.
If you go to Amy's, you will want some ice cream.
You can have them mix up lots of different flavors.
You can choose a cup or a cone. My favorite flavor is bubblegum.

We don't have a lot of cold weather in
Austin. We have a lot of hot weather. When we do have cold weather, it's not very cold. We usually don't have
any snow. At Christmas, you can wear short sleeves. When it snows...no school!

In Austin, there is really hot weather.
In the summertime, it gets really hot. It sometimes gets to 100 degrees. If it's really hot in Austin, you
need to get an umbrella to keep the sun out of your eyes. Turn the air conditioner
up high in your house. Drink lots of ice water. Austin is really fun, even when

Threadgill's has an old look. The building is made out of an old gasoline station. It has loud music on the weekends. They have food like chicken,

Lake Travis

Lake Travis is fun for water skiing or fishing. You can
also boogie board. You can do lots of things there. On the Fourth of July, you can watch fireworks over the
lake. Lake Travis is a great place to go for a romantic date. Lake Travis is fun,
so go there someday!

Barton Springs

Barton Springs is fun! You can go swimming there. You can also go off of the diving board. Be sure to bring your goggles so you can see underwater. The water at Barton Springs is freezing cold. You might want to wear a diving suit so
that your body won't get cold.

Mount Bonnell is an extinct volcano in Austin. If you go to the top and look down, you will see water. It's the tallest place in Austin. You can have

Wally's Burger Express is a hamburger restaurant. It is
on Mesa Drive. Wally's has good food. I really like their vanilla shakes! They are
creamy and sugary. They also serve good chicken and french fries. You can either
eat in the restaurant or go through the drive-through window. They have the best

The County Line Restaurant

The County Line is a great place!
It has the best barbeque you can find. You can eat beans, ribs and chicken there.

practice. You can see them at St. Edward's University. You can get the player's autograph. You can buy a Dallas
Cowboy t-shirt. It's hot out there, so wear something cool. The Cowboys are our

Zilker Park is very fun. It has a playscape with swings.
It has a red fire engine that you can climb on.
It has picnic tables that you can eat on. There are plays and performances there.
