Red Shouldered Hawk

PHYSICAL CHARACTERISTICS:
Smaller, less common, and more colorful than the Red-tailed Hawk. It has a reddish-brown chest and a checkered wings. The Red-shouldered Hawk flies with a series of flaps and then a long glide. It has short rounded wings and a long tail.

HABITAT DESCRIPTION:
It has been known to nest next to fish hatchery ponds or sitting on a wall next to a fish tank, snagging fish that come too close to the side of the wall. In Bakersfield, CA. the Red-shouldered Hawk flies around freely.

DIET:
It feeds on small fish like trout. It also eats small birds or rodents.
