BIRDS OF PREY

NAME OF BIRD Barn Owl

SCIENTIFIC NAME Tyto Alba

PHYSICAL CHARACTERISTICS
About 14”-21” in length. It’s wingspan is 40.5” from tip-to-tip. The Barn Owl has unusually long legs and beak, small mahogany brown eyes on it’s elegant heart face. It has sharp hearing and lives up to 11 years in the wild. Barn Owls used to be mistaken for ghosts! When they feel threatened they will wiggle and start hissing like a snake.

HABITAT DESCRIPTION
They like to live in abandoned buildings, silos, steeples, bridges, and windmills. Usually located in grasslands or wetlands. Australia is extremely overpopulated with rodents so it’s a perfect place for owls especially Barn Owls.

DIET Barn Owls will eat rodents, bats, small birds, reptiles, and in some cases insects! They reduce the population of rodents better than traps, cats, or poison. All owls will regurgitate their food after eating so pellets are usually found in their cavity (nest).
