Highland Park 5th grade Leadership Austin Kids participated in Keep Austin Beautiful's Town Lake Clean Sweep 2002, helping to collect hundreds of bags of trash along the banks of the Colorado River in downtown Austin. Students researched pollution problems associated with Town Lake, & were surprised to find that physical pollution is as much, or more of, a problem than chemical pollution.
Students documented their work in a video project, creating a documentary film - in which they discussed the pollution problems, along with suggested solutions - that was shown around the campus to many classes. Their documentary was also selected for a showing at the First Annual Austin ISD Digital Film Festival at the Travis High School Theatre on May 3.
The film featured video, narration & voice-overs, interviews, music, textual summaries, sound effects, & even bloopers, and was shot using the school's digital video camera, & produced & edited by students using Apple Computer's iMovie video editing software.
