Castles of Scotland
Edinburgh Castle
Inhabited since historic times, the great rock which this
castle stands occupies a srategic position near the mouth of the River Forth. A small
chapel forms the oldest part of the castle. The castle has played a central role in
Scotlands history. It has served as a royal residence for Scottish kings during times of
trouble. In 1566, Queen Mary gave birth to James VI, who became James I of England.
Sterling Castle
Stirling guards the gateway to
the Highlands at a point where much of the history of Scotland has been made. It is
doubtful if any fortress in the kingdom has had such a violent past, with marching armies,
battles, murder and sudden death being every day events. The castle was badly damaged in
thte Civil War, and last saw action in 1746 during the Jacobite Rebellion.
