The region of the Plains Indians stretched from west of the Mississippi River to the Rocky Mountains and from Canada to Mexico. Very few Indians lived in this area before the Europeans arrived, mainly because it was difficult to hunt for food. But after the Spaniards brought the horse and guns to the region in the 1600's, Indians then had a way of hunting the buffalo. This changed the way of life on the Plains, and Indians flourished there.
Some of the major groups were the Arapaho, Blackfoot, Cheyenne, Comanche, Crow, Iowa, Kansa, Missouri, Omaha, Pawnee, and Sioux.
