Origin of Name: Aaccording to one ancient Hawaiian legend, the islands were named in honor of the legendary Polynesian chief Hawai'i-loa, who is said to have been the discoverer of the islands. Another explantion is that the early Polynesian settlers named the islands after their far-off South Pacific homeland, which in ancuent times had been called Hawaiki
