Origin of Name: Aaccording to one ancient Hawaiian legend, the islands were named in honor of the legendary Polynesian chief Hawai'i-loa, who is said to have been the discoverer of the islands. Another explantion is that the early Polynesian settlers named the islands after their far-off South Pacific homeland, which in ancuent times had been called Hawaiki

State Capital: Honolulu, on the island of Oahu

State Nickname: Aloha State

State Motto: "Ua mau ke ea o ka aina i ka pono" (The Life of the Land Is Prepetuated in Righteousness)


State Flag: The state flag features eight horizontal stripes of red,white, and blue;and a Union Jack in the upper left-hand cornner. The eight stripes represent the eight main islands of Hawai'i; the Union Jack is a reminder of England's role in Hawai'i's history.

State Bird: Nene (Hawaiian Goose)

State Flower: Yellow hibiscus
