General Information on the State of Georgia

Origin of Name: The state of Georgia is named for George the II of England.

State Capital: Atlanta

State Nickname: The state of Georgia is sometimes called "The Peach State," named for the large amounts of peaches grown in Georgia. Some times it is also called the "Empire of the South" because it is the largest state East of the Mississippi River.Some times Georgia is also called "The Cracker State" and "The Goober State". These are all unofficial nicknames.

State Motto: Wisdom, Justice, and Moderation


State Flag: The state flag of Georgia has a blue stipe running down the left side of it. In side the blue field is a picture of the state seal. On the remaining space it is red with a large blue "X". The blue "X" has thirteen gold stars running up and down it.

State Fish: Largemouth Bass
