Statehood: March 1, 1867 the 37th state

Origin of Name: The name Nebraska comes from the Oto Indian word Nebrathka. This word means "Flat Water". In 1843, Lieutenant John C. Fremont suggested that this land should be named Nebraska.

State Capital: Lincoln

State Nickname: The Cornhusker State

State Motto: "Equality Before the Law"


State Flag: Adopted in 1925. The flag is blue with a golden colored state seal. On the seal: is a smith with a hammer and anvil which represents the mechanical arts,a cabin, corn, and wheat represent agriculture, a river and a train represent transportation. Behind these images stand the Rocky Mountains.
