Origin of Name: Named for the Wisconsin River, whose Chippewa name is translated "the gathering of water."


State Capital: Madison

State Nickname: Badger State"; also called" America's Dairyland".

State Flag: The state flag was adopted in 1913. Centered on a dark blue field is the four-part Wisconsin shield symbolizing Wisconsin's agriculture, mining navigation, and manufacturing. In its center is the United States shield. A sailor stands at the left of the Wisconsin shield, and a miner at the right. Above it is a Badger and below are a horn of plenty and a pyramid of pig lead.The state motto "Forward", and a band of thirteen original colonies are above and below. Above and below them are the name "Wisconsin" and "1848," the year of statehood.

Geography

Borders: Lake Superior and the upper Peninsula of Michhigan border Wisconsin on the north. Lake Michigan is Wisconsin's eastern border, Minnesota and Iowa are to the west, and Illinois is the southern border.

Highest Point: Timms Hillin the Price County, 1,952 ft. (595 m) above sea level.

Lowest Point: Lake Michigan's shoreline, 580 ft. (174 m) above sea level.
